Experience of «Proxeed Plus» application in men with idiopathic asthenozoospermia

Background: Antioxidant and metabolic therapy is one of different variants of idiopathic asthenozoospermia treatment. Combination of L-carnitine, acetyl-L-carnitine, fructose, citric acid, selenium, Co Q10, Vitamin C, Zinc, Folic acid and vitamin B12 — Proxeed Plus (Sigma-Tau, Italy) are the ingredients for synergistic action on key metabolic steps of spermatogenesis, which lead to their maturation and improve its function, enhance and protect energy production, protect sperm from oxidative stress injury and prevent spermatozoa apoptosis.
Methods: Fifty four infertile men, from 22 to 43 years, whose chief complaint was primary couple infertility longer than 12 months on a base of regular intercourse with the following baseline sperm selection criteria: concentration > 20 • 106/mL, < 50% of sperm with progressive forward movement or < 25% with rapid linear progression and normal sperm morphology > 30% (WHO, 1999). Patients took one packet of Proxeed Plus twice a day before meals for three months. Spermograms dates were studied before and after therapy.
Results: After the therapy termination authentic increasing of sperm with progressive forward movement and with rapid linear progression (Р < 0,05) and insignificant increasing in their concentration were found. Full normalization of spermogram parameters was marked at 26 men (48,1%). Two cases of pregnancy have been noted.
Conclusion: Application of Proxeed Plus leads to improvement of quality sperm indicators, increases concentration of sperm with progressive forward movement and with rapid linear progression and in some cases to full normalization of its parameters.
